Speech and Language Milestones  for babies

Speech And Language:- Speech is the verbal communication. It is the set of sounds that we make at the time of communication. Speech alone carries no meaning.

Language:- How we use the speech to formulate the sentences is called language.

Components of Speech:-

1. Articulation
2. Voicing
3. Fluency

Components of Language:-

1. Expressive
2. Receptive
3. Pragmatics

Speech and Language Milestones birth-1

Speech Milestones:-

1. In the first 3 months producing sounds like cooing, going.
2. Starts to babble around 6 months.
3. Starts to produce sounds like “ba ba”

Language Milestones:-

1. Turn toward sounds.
2. Cries differently for their needs.
3. Recognize own name and family member name.

Speech Milestones:-

1. Around 2 year child tries to speak different vowels and consonants.
2. This speech is understandable by the family members.

Language Milestones:-

1. Follows one step direction. (e.g. “catching ball”)
2. Answers in yes or no. (e.g. “are you a girl”)
3. Combine 2-word phrases (e.g. “many toys”)

Speech and Language Milestones birth 2-3 years

Speech Milestones:-
1. Sounds like p, b, m, n, w, h, t, d, k, g, ng and y are typically mastered.
2. 50-75% speech is understood by an unfamiliar listener.

Language Milestones:-

1. Follows simple 2 step direction. (e.g. “ get your shoes and give them to mother”)
2. When you request, starts to take name.
3. Answer simple wh questions. (e.g. “ what is your name”).
4. Combine 3-word phrases. (“e.g.” I like juice.”).

Speech and Language Milestones 3-5 years

Speech Milestones:-

1. By age 3-3.5

75% speech is understandable by the unfamiliar listeners.

Should produce: m, n, h, w, p, t, k, b, d, g, f, y and most vowel sounds.

2. By age 4-4.5

100% speech is understandable by unfamiliar listeners, may have pronunciation error.

Should produce: v, j and gl.

3. By age 5-5.5

100% speech is understandable by unfamiliar listeners, may have pronunciation error.

Should produce: s, “sh”, “th” sp-, st-, sk-, sm-, sn-, sw-, bl-, pl-, kl-, tr-, kr-.

4. Common sound errors that may continue to present at age 6, such as:

r, l, z, “th” and “ch”.

Language Milestones:-

1. Follow 3 step directions (e.g. “put your toy on the table, take your milk and come here!”).
2. Starts to use 4 or more words in a sentence.
3. Answers more complicated questions (e.g. “why is he at the doctor”).
4. Starts to recognize letters and numbers.
